Kotak Bank credit cards for flight bookings India 2026
Kotak credit cards: fully available again since February 2025

On 24 April 2024, the RBI imposed restrictions on Kotak Mahindra Bank prohibiting the digital onboarding of new customers and the issuance of new credit cards, citing IT governance deficiencies. These restrictions were fully lifted on 12 February 2025 after Kotak completed corrective measures verified by an external RBI-approved audit. As of May 2026, all Kotak credit cards can be applied for and issued normally through kotak.bank.in, the Kotak mobile app, and bank branches. Over 46.3 lakh credit cards are active as of February 2026.

What "Air Miles" means on Kotak cards

Kotak's Air Miles is a proprietary rewards currency — not actual airline miles from any specific carrier. You earn them on eligible spends, store them in your Kotak account, and then either use them for bookings via the Kotak Unbox platform (at ₹1 per Air Mile) or transfer them to airline and hotel loyalty programmes at the ratios described in Question 7. Air Miles have a 3-year validity from the date of accrual. There is no redemption fee for using Air Miles on Kotak Unbox.

2 What Is the Kotak Unbox Platform and How Does It Work?

Kotak Unbox is Kotak Mahindra Bank's in-house travel booking and rewards portal. It is available exclusively through the Kotak Mobile Banking app — there is no standalone public website for Kotak Unbox. To access it:

  1. Open the Kotak Mobile Banking app and log in.
  2. Go to the Wallet or Credit Cards section. Select your Kotak Air+ (or Air/Solitaire) card.
  3. Scroll to the Air Miles section and check your Air Miles balance.
  4. Tap "Redeem" to access Kotak Unbox. Here you can search for flights and hotels.
  5. At checkout, choose how many Air Miles to apply (up to 80% of the booking value).
  6. Pay the remaining balance with your Kotak card — which earns further Air Miles on that payment.

Kotak Unbox aggregates flight and hotel inventory from partners. It functions like any OTA search but is accessible only within the Kotak app. The key benefit of Kotak Unbox for Air Miles cardholders is threefold: (1) it triggers the accelerated 5 Air Miles per ₹100 earn rate on Air+ bookings, (2) it lets you redeem Air Miles at full ₹1 per mile value, and (3) it handles partner transfer requests to airline programmes.

You cannot earn 5X or 3X Air Miles booking flights on external OTAs

Booking the same flight on MakeMyTrip, Cleartrip, or any other OTA using your Kotak Air+ card earns only the base rate of 2 Air Miles per ₹100 — not the accelerated 5 Air Miles per ₹100. The accelerated rate is strictly limited to flight and hotel bookings made via Kotak Unbox. Always compare fares: if the Kotak Unbox fare is within ₹500–₹1,000 of the best available fare on an external OTA, booking via Unbox to earn 5X is almost always the better choice.

3 What Is the Best Kotak Card for Domestic Flights?

Kotak Air+ Credit Card Best Domestic Travel Card

Kotak Air+ — key domestic flight features (verified May 2026)

  • Earns 5 Air Miles per ₹100 on flight and hotel bookings via Kotak Unbox — effectively 5% return (at ₹1 per Air Mile on Unbox)
  • The 5X rate comprises: 2 base Air Miles + 3 accelerated Air Miles per ₹100. The accelerated 3 miles are capped at 15,000 Air Miles per statement cycle (equivalent to ₹5 lakh in Unbox travel spends). Above the cap, you continue to earn the base 2 Air Miles per ₹100.
  • Earns 2 Air Miles per ₹100 on all other eligible spends (no monthly cap on base earn)
  • Welcome: 2,500 Air Miles on joining (within 120 days of card issuance, on fee payment)
  • Renewal: 2,500 Air Miles annually on annual fee payment
  • Lounge access: 4 domestic + 2 international per year (see Question 12)
  • 2% forex markup — but zero Air Miles on international transactions
  • Fuel surcharge waiver: 1% waiver on fuel transactions between ₹400–₹7,500; capped at ₹4,500 per anniversary year
  • Add-on cards available at no extra charge; lounge access is primary cardholder only
  • Air Miles validity: 3 years from accrual
  • No annual fee waiver by spend — ₹3,000 fee is charged every year regardless of spending
Joining/Annual fee: ₹3,000 + GST Forex markup: 2% (but no miles on intl. spends) Network: Mastercard / Visa
💡 Real domestic booking example: You book a ₹9,000 Delhi–Bengaluru round trip via Kotak Unbox. You earn 450 Air Miles (5 × 90 = 450). You apply 450 Air Miles = ₹450 discount, pay the remaining ₹8,550 on the card (earning 2 Air Miles per ₹100 on that = 171 more Air Miles). Total Air Miles earned on this trip: 621, worth ₹621 on the next Kotak Unbox booking. Effective return: ~6.9%.

4 Kotak Air+ vs Kotak Air — Which Should You Choose?

Feature Kotak Air+ Kotak Air
Annual fee ₹3,000 + GST ₹999 + GST
Travel earn (Kotak Unbox) 5 Air Miles/₹100 3 Air Miles/₹100
Accelerated earn cap 15,000 Air Miles/statement cycle 5,000 Air Miles/statement cycle
Base earn (all other spends) 2 Air Miles/₹100 1 Air Mile/₹100
Welcome/renewal Air Miles 2,500 1,000
Forex markup 2% 3.5%
Miles on international spends Zero Zero
Domestic lounge 4 visits/year (2/quarter, no spend condition) 4 visits/year — requires ₹60,000 quarterly spend to activate
International lounge 2 visits/year (Priority Pass) None
Annual fee waiver None None
Min. Air Miles for Unbox booking 200 Air Miles 500 Air Miles
Partner transfer minimum 1,000 Air Miles 1,000 Air Miles
Transfer cap per year 1 lakh Air Miles 1 lakh Air Miles
Air Miles validity 3 years 3 years
Air+ vs Air verdict: If you travel more than twice a year and will use Kotak Unbox for bookings, the Air+ at ₹3,000 is clearly the better card. The welcome 2,500 Air Miles alone are worth ₹2,500 on your first Kotak Unbox booking, effectively covering 83% of the annual fee in year one. The 5X earn rate versus 3X on Air, the lower 200-mile minimum for Unbox bookings, and the inclusion of international lounge access all strengthen the case for Air+. The Air card is only worth considering if your total annual travel spend via Kotak Unbox is below ₹3 lakh per year, in which case the ₹999 fee is easier to justify.

5 How Do I Earn Air Miles on the Kotak Air+ and Air Cards?

Air Miles are credited to your account within 5 days of transaction settlement. The earn structure is straightforward:

Spend Category Air+ Earn Rate Air Earn Rate Cap
Flights and hotels booked via Kotak Unbox 5 Air Miles/₹100 3 Air Miles/₹100 Air+: 15,000/cycle; Air: 5,000/cycle (base earns continue after cap)
All other eligible spends 2 Air Miles/₹100 1 Air Mile/₹100 No cap
International transactions Zero Air Miles Zero Air Miles
Excluded categories (see Q13) Zero Zero
Kotak Solitaire earn rates (invite-only reference)

The Kotak Solitaire earns 10 Air Miles per ₹100 on flights and hotels via Kotak Unbox (capped at 1,00,000 Air Miles per statement cycle — equivalent to ₹14.3 lakh in Unbox spends). Base earn: 3 Air Miles per ₹100 on all other spends. Voucher purchases via Kotak Unbox earn 10 Air Miles per ₹100 (capped at 10,000 Air Miles per calendar month under the April–June 2026 promotional offer). Additionally, Solitaire runs a 20% bonus Air Miles on partner transfers (April–June 2026 offer, subject to confirmation at kotak.bank.in).

6 How Do I Redeem Air Miles for Flight Bookings via Kotak Unbox?

There are two ways to use your Kotak Air Miles for flights:

Path 1: Book directly on Kotak Unbox (1 Air Mile = ₹1)

  1. Open the Kotak Mobile Banking app → Credit Cards → Air+ card → Air Miles → Redeem → Kotak Unbox.
  2. Search for your flight. Select the fare and proceed to payment.
  3. At payment, enter the number of Air Miles you want to apply. The booking value shows reduced by the mile value.
  4. You can apply a maximum of 80% of the booking value in Air Miles. The remaining minimum 20% must be paid by card.
  5. Minimum Air Miles for a Kotak Unbox booking: 200 (Air+) or 500 (Air).
  6. The card payment on the remaining 20% earns further Air Miles at the applicable rate.
  7. No redemption fee — unlike some other programmes, Kotak charges zero for Kotak Unbox Air Miles redemptions.

Path 2: Transfer to airline/hotel partner (2 Air Miles = 1 partner mile)

  1. Access Kotak Unbox via the mobile app → Air Miles → Transfer to Partner.
  2. Select your partner programme and enter your loyalty account number.
  3. Enter the amount of Air Miles to transfer. Minimum: 1,000 Air Miles. No maximum per transfer (subject to the 1 lakh annual cap).
  4. Partner miles typically appear in your loyalty account within 3–7 working days.
  5. Transfers are irreversible — cannot be returned to Kotak Air Miles once transferred.
The 80% redemption cap is often misunderstood

You cannot use Air Miles to pay for an entire flight booking. A maximum of 80% of any booking's total value can be covered by Air Miles — the remaining 20% must always be paid by your Kotak card. This is not a penalty; the 20% card payment earns additional Air Miles (2 per ₹100 on Air+), which adds to your balance for future redemptions. Factor this 20% card payment into your planning when targeting a free flight redemption.

7 What Are the Kotak Air Miles Transfer Partners and Ratios?

Kotak Air Miles transfer to 9 partners. The transfer ratio is 2:1 for most airline partners — meaning 2 Kotak Air Miles convert to 1 partner mile. This is the reverse of what Axis Atlas offers (1 EDGE Mile = 2 partner miles) and is the single most important comparison point when choosing between the two cards.

Accor Live Limitless (ALL) Ratio: 2:1 · 2 Air Miles → 1 ALL Point
Air Canada Aeroplan Ratio: 2:1 · 2 Air Miles → 1 Aeroplan Mile
Air France Flying Blue Ratio: 2:1 · 2 Air Miles → 1 Flying Blue Mile
British Airways Avios Ratio: 2:1 · 2 Air Miles → 1 Avios
Cathay Pacific Asia Miles Ratio: 2:1 · 2 Air Miles → 1 Asia Mile
Etihad Airways Guest Ratio: 2:1 · 2 Air Miles → 1 Etihad Mile
Qatar Airways Privilege Club Ratio: 2:1 · 2 Air Miles → 1 Avqali Mile
United Airlines MileagePlus Ratio: 2:1 · 2 Air Miles → 1 United Mile
Marriott Bonvoy Ratio: 3:1 · 3 Air Miles → 1 Bonvoy Point (worst ratio)
The 2:1 ratio means partner transfers give half the value of Kotak Unbox direct redemption

On Kotak Unbox, 1 Air Mile = ₹1. If a partner mile is worth ₹1, then 2 Air Miles via partner transfer = ₹1 — the same value. But most airline miles are worth between ₹0.75–₹1.50 each depending on how you redeem. Only when a partner mile is worth more than ₹2 each (premium business class redemptions) does the partner transfer route give more value than booking directly on Kotak Unbox. For most domestic economy bookings, redeeming directly on Kotak Unbox at 1:1 is simpler and delivers equal or better value than the 2:1 partner transfer.

The annual cap of 1 lakh Air Miles per card account per calendar year applies to partner transfers. Unlike the Axis Atlas Group A/Group B cap structure, Kotak's cap is a single combined limit across all partner transfers. For Air+ holders who also receive milestone Air Miles from other Kotak cards (points from other Kotak cards can be transferred into the Air+ account), this cap is relevant for high spenders targeting large partner redemptions.

8 Is Kotak Good for International Flights? The Critical Limitation Explained.

This is the most important question for any traveller considering the Kotak Air+ for international trips — and the answer requires a careful distinction.

For booking international flights on Indian OTAs priced in INR

If you book an international flight on Kotak Unbox or any Indian OTA where the fare is priced and charged in Indian Rupees (INR), the transaction is treated as a domestic INR transaction. You earn 5 Air Miles per ₹100 on Kotak Unbox bookings and the 2% forex markup does not apply. This is the standard experience for most India-based travellers booking international routes on Indian OTAs.

For spending at international merchants in foreign currency

Kotak Air+ earns zero Air Miles on foreign currency transactions

If the billing currency is anything other than INR — whether you are swiping your card abroad, booking on a foreign airline's website priced in USD/GBP/EUR, or making any payment charged in a foreign currency — your Kotak Air+ earns zero Air Miles on that transaction. You pay a 2% forex markup but get nothing in return in terms of rewards. This is confirmed by Kotak's official T&Cs: "No Air Miles will be accrued on International Transactions."

For context: HDFC Infinia earns 3.33% on all international spends and transfers to KrisFlyer at 1:1. Axis Atlas earns 2 EDGE Miles per ₹100 on international spends. SBI Miles Elite earns 6 Travel Credits per ₹200 on travel including international. Kotak Air+ earns nothing on international transactions — making it a poor choice as your primary card for international spend.

Practical guidance for NRI and international travellers

If you hold a Kotak Air+ card and travel internationally:

  • Use Kotak Air+ for Kotak Unbox flight bookings made in INR before you travel — earn 5X there.
  • Switch to a different low-markup card (HDFC Infinia at 2%, Axis Magnus at 2%, or Amazon Pay ICICI at 1.99%) for all actual international currency spending — hotel bills abroad, in-flight purchases, airport retail, foreign currency food and transport.
  • Do not use Kotak Air+ as your primary card while physically abroad unless you are specifically using it for a Kotak Unbox INR booking from your phone.

9 What Is the Forex Markup on Kotak Bank Credit Cards?

Card Forex Markup Air Miles on Intl. Spends? Saving vs 3.5% on ₹1L intl. spend
Kotak Air+ 2% No ~₹1,500 saved on markup
Kotak Air 3.5% No Baseline
IndiGo Kotak 3.5% No Baseline
IndiGo Kotak XL 3.5% No Baseline
Kotak Zen Signature Standard (3.5%) No Baseline

The Kotak Air+ at 2% is one of India's lower forex markups on a credit card. It saves ₹1,500 per ₹1 lakh of international spend versus a standard 3.5% card. However, the saving from lower markup is partially negated by the absence of any reward earning on those same transactions. Cards like HDFC Infinia (2% markup + 3.33% base reward on international spends) or Axis Magnus (2% markup + base EDGE Reward Points on international spends) offer both lower markup and reward accumulation on foreign transactions simultaneously — a combined benefit Kotak Air+ cannot match.

10 What Is the Kotak Solitaire Credit Card?

Kotak Solitaire — invite-only metal card for Solitaire Banking clients

  • Earns 10 Air Miles per ₹100 on flights and hotels via Kotak Unbox — 10% return at ₹1 per mile, the highest earn rate in Kotak's consumer card portfolio
  • Accelerated Unbox earn capped at 1,00,000 Air Miles per statement cycle (equivalent to ₹14.3 lakh in Unbox travel spends per month)
  • Base earn: 3 Air Miles per ₹100 on all other eligible spends — no cap on base earn
  • Voucher purchase via Kotak Unbox: 10 Air Miles per ₹100 (capped at 10,000 Air Miles per calendar month, per April–June 2026 promotional offer)
  • Unlimited domestic and international lounge access — for primary and add-on cardholders
  • No Air Miles on international transactions (same limitation as Air+)
  • Up to 3 add-on cards
  • Postcard Hotels partnership: ₹5,000 flat discount on stays at Postcard Hotels in India, Bhutan, or Sri Lanka
  • Bonus promotion (April–June 2026): 20% bonus Air Miles on partner transfers — example: transfer 10,000 Air Miles, receive 2,000 bonus Air Miles back in account
  • Metal card
Annual fee: Invite-only — tied to Solitaire Banking relationship Apply: Via Kotak Solitaire Banking only

The Solitaire card is broadly comparable to an ultra-premium category in Kotak's hierarchy but is not publicly available. If you are a Kotak Solitaire Banking client (high-net-worth private banking tier), enquire with your relationship manager. For travellers who book ₹2+ lakh per month in flights and hotels via Kotak Unbox, the 10 Air Miles per ₹100 delivers exceptional returns.

11 IndiGo Kotak Cards — What Changed and What Do They Offer Now?

The programme change: 6E Rewards → IndiGo BluChip

IndiGo discontinued the 6E Rewards programme — all existing 6E Rewards Kotak cardholders are being migrated

IndiGo launched its new IndiGo BluChip Programme in 2025, replacing the 6E Rewards Programme. Kotak Mahindra Bank has launched two new co-branded cards under this programme. Existing holders of 6E Rewards – IndiGo Kotak and 6E Rewards XL – IndiGo Kotak credit cards continue to receive their existing benefits until migration is completed. Once migrated, benefits transition to the new BluChip structure. Check with Kotak Bank for your migration timeline.

  • BluChip validity: 24 months from accrual; extended by a further 24 months with any account activity — effectively lifetime validity for active users

IndiGo Kotak XL Credit Card (premium) Co-Brand · IndiGo Premium

IndiGo Kotak XL — the premium IndiGo co-branded card

  • Annual fee: ₹3,000 + GST
  • Earns up to 21 IndiGo BluChips per ₹100 on IndiGo bookings (5 card + 4 IndiGo channel + up to 12 tier bonus for Blu 1 members)

  • Welcome: 4,000 BluChips voucher + 6E Eats voucher on fee payment
  • Renewal: 4,000 BluChips voucher annually on fee payment
  • Milestone vouchers: 4,000 BluChips at ₹1.5L, ₹4L, ₹7.5L, and ₹12L annual spend (4 × 4,000 = 16,000 BluChips in milestone vouchers per year)
  • 2 complimentary domestic lounge visits per quarter (8 per year) — no spend condition specified
  • No international lounge access
  • Forex markup: 3.5%
BluChip voucher validity is only 6 months

While IndiGo BluChips earned through card spends have effectively lifetime validity (24 months, extended with activity), the vouchers received as welcome, renewal, and milestone benefits have a 6-month validity from issuance. Plan your IndiGo travel around these voucher issuance dates to avoid expiry. A milestone voucher issued in November and forgotten until the following June will expire with no recovery. Set calendar reminders immediately on receiving each voucher.

IndiGo Kotak cards — who they are for: If you fly IndiGo domestically more than 6–8 times per year and are enrolled in the IndiGo BluChip programme, the XL card is a strong IndiGo ecosystem card. BluChip vouchers worth up to 16,000 per year at ₹3,000 annual fee deliver clear positive ROI. If you also fly other airlines or want lounge access for international travel, the IndiGo Kotak XL's limitations (no international lounge, 3.5% forex markup, IndiGo-only redemption) make the Kotak Air+ or an airline-agnostic card like Axis Atlas the more flexible choice.

12 What Lounge Access Do Kotak Cards Give at Indian Airports?

Card Domestic Lounge International Lounge Spend Condition?
Kotak Air+ 4/year (2/quarter) 2/year via Priority Pass No — unconditional on Air+
Kotak Air 4/year (1/quarter) None Yes — requires ₹60,000 previous quarter spend
Kotak Solitaire Unlimited Unlimited No — invite-only card
IndiGo Kotak None None
IndiGo Kotak XL 8/year (2/quarter) None No spend condition specified
Kotak Zen Signature 8/year 3/year Check current T&Cs
How to access domestic lounges with your Kotak Air+ card

Domestic lounge access on Kotak Air+ is via DreamFolks. Present your Kotak Air+ credit card at the participating lounge. A nominal validation charge of ₹2 per visit is debited and then auto-reversed. To access international lounges via Priority Pass, you must first register for Priority Pass via the Kotak Mobile Banking app or your card welcome kit. A $1 visit validation charge is debited at international lounges and auto-reversed within 7 working days. Ensure international transactions are activated on your card before attempting an international lounge visit — the validation is a small foreign currency transaction.

Lounge access is for the primary cardholder only on both Air and Air+. Add-on cardholders do not receive complimentary lounge access on these cards.

13 What Spending Categories Do NOT Earn Air Miles on Kotak Cards?

The following categories earn zero Air Miles on Kotak Air+ and Kotak Air cards. These are confirmed in the official T&Cs from Kotak Bank's website:

  • Utility and telecom bill payments
  • Insurance premium payments
  • Education institution payments
  • Government payments (note: Kotak Solitaire allows tax payments; check your specific card)
  • Rent payments
  • Fuel transactions
  • Wallet loading and top-ups (Paytm, Amazon Pay, PhonePe, etc.)
  • EMI conversions at point of sale
  • Online gaming platform spends
  • Cash advance transactions
  • International transactions (any foreign currency spend)

These categories also do not count towards the accelerated earn cap calculation — only eligible spend counts. For Kotak Air cards, fuel spends do receive the 1% fuel surcharge waiver (up to ₹4,500 per year on transactions between ₹400–₹7,500) even though they earn no Air Miles.

14 What Are the Biggest Weaknesses of Kotak Travel Cards?

  • No Air Miles on international transactions — the most impactful limitation. Unlike HDFC, Axis, or SBI travel cards, neither Kotak Air nor Air+ earns any rewards on foreign currency transactions. For travellers who spend significantly on international bookings or while abroad, this nullifies the reward proposition for a large portion of their travel spending.
  • Partner transfer ratio of 2:1 gives half the value of Axis Atlas. For every 2,000 Kotak Air Miles, you get 1,000 partner miles. For the same 2,000 EDGE Miles on Axis Atlas, you get 4,000 partner miles on Group B partners. If accumulating partner airline miles is your goal, Kotak Air cards are among the least efficient instruments available at their price tier.
  • Kotak Unbox platform dependency restricts booking flexibility. The 5X earn rate is strictly limited to Kotak Unbox. Any booking via MakeMyTrip, Cleartrip, Ixigo, or direct airline websites earns only the base 2 Air Miles per ₹100. You are tied to one platform for maximum value — which may not always show the lowest available fare.
  • No annual fee waiver on Kotak Air+. The ₹3,000 annual fee is charged regardless of spending, unlike SBI Miles Elite (waived on ₹10 lakh) or Axis Atlas (no waiver either, but higher renewal miles compensate partially). The welcome 2,500 Air Miles partially offset year-one cost but not every subsequent year.
  • Lounge access is primary cardholder only on Air and Air+. If you travel with a partner or family member on add-on cards, they have no complimentary lounge access. This compares unfavourably with ICICI Emeralde Private Metal and Axis Magnus, which extend lounge access to add-on cardholders.
  • Kotak Air standard card's domestic lounge requires ₹60,000 quarterly spend. For a card with a ₹999 annual fee, this is a high activation threshold. A cardholder who spends ₹50,000 in Q1 gets no lounge access that quarter, even though they have 4 visits entitled for the year.
  • IndiGo Kotak standard card has no lounge access. For a co-branded travel card, the absence of any airport lounge access — even one visit per quarter — is a significant gap for a card marketed to frequent travellers.
  • Kotak Air+ has no travel insurance. No trip cancellation cover, no air accident insurance, no overseas medical cover. HDFC Infinia, ICICI Emeralde Private Metal, and even SBI ELITE all include meaningful travel insurance at comparable fee levels.
  • Marriott Bonvoy transfers at 3:1 are particularly poor value. 3 Kotak Air Miles convert to just 1 Marriott Bonvoy point. Marriott points themselves are already in the lower-value tier of hotel currencies — combining a weak transfer ratio with a lower-value programme makes this the worst use case for Kotak Air Miles.

15 Common Mistakes Kotak Cardholders Make on Flight Bookings

  1. Booking flights on external OTAs expecting 5X Air Miles. The 5 Air Miles per ₹100 rate applies only to Kotak Unbox. Booking via MakeMyTrip, Cleartrip, or directly on an airline website with a Kotak Air+ card earns just 2 Air Miles per ₹100 — 60% less than the accelerated rate. Always use Kotak Unbox when bookings are within ₹1,000 of the best available external fare.
  2. Expecting Air Miles on foreign currency transactions. The 2% forex markup on Air+ is competitive but earns nothing in return. Using Air+ as your primary card for spending in dollars, euros, or pounds while abroad is suboptimal — you pay the markup and earn zero miles.
  3. Transferring Air Miles to Marriott Bonvoy without a specific redemption planned. The 3:1 ratio is the worst available across all Kotak partners. Marriott Bonvoy points are also not freely convertible to airline miles. Only transfer to Marriott if you have a specific hotel redemption planned where the Bonvoy points cost is substantially lower than the cash rate.
  4. Letting welcome and renewal Air Miles expire unused. Both Air+ (2,500 miles) and Air (1,000 miles) credit welcome and renewal Air Miles on fee payment. These are credited to your account and have a 3-year validity from accrual. However, if you never use the card, you may forget about them. Check your Air Miles balance in the Kotak app every 6 months.
  5. Trying to use Air Miles to pay 100% of a flight booking. A maximum of 80% of any booking value can be paid via Air Miles. The remaining 20% must be paid by card. Do not attempt to apply more than 80% — the system will reject the excess.
  6. Attempting international lounge access without activating international transactions. The Priority Pass visit validation is a foreign currency charge ($1). If international transactions are not activated on your card via the Kotak app, the validation transaction will fail and you will be denied lounge entry. Activate international transactions before your travel dates via Kotak Mobile Banking → Credit Cards → Card Controls.

16 What Happens If a Kotak Card Payment Fails on a Flight Booking?

The technical process for a failed Kotak credit card payment on a flight booking follows the same pattern as any Indian bank payment failure:

  • If your account is charged but the booking is not confirmed: The amount is in a suspense account — not lost. Do not retry immediately. Check your Kotak app transaction history and your booking confirmation email (both from the OTA and separately from the airline PNR).
  • Auto-refund timeline: NPCI mandates T+5 to T+7 working days for failed payment reversals. Your Kotak credit card account should receive the refund within this window.
  • If using Air Miles in a part-payment that fails: Contact Kotak Bank customer care. Air Miles applied to a failed booking should be returned to your balance — confirm this explicitly with support, as the card payment and the Air Miles redemption are two separate components of the transaction.
  • Contact Kotak customer care: 1860 266 2666 (within India) or +91 22 6600 6022 (international). Email: [email protected]. Alternatively, raise a dispute through the Kotak Mobile Banking app under Credit Cards → Raise a Query.

18 Quick Tips to Maximise Kotak Air Miles for Flights

  • Always book flights via Kotak Unbox, not external OTAs, whenever the Unbox fare is within ₹800–₹1,000 of the cheapest alternative. At 5 Air Miles per ₹100 on a ₹10,000 booking, you earn ₹500 in Air Miles — more than most OTA promo codes on domestic fares.
  • Redeem Air Miles directly on Kotak Unbox (1:1 at ₹1/mile) for most domestic bookings rather than transferring to partners at 2:1. The direct redemption is simpler, has no transfer delay, and delivers equal or better value for most economy fare redemptions.
  • Only use partner transfers for premium redemptions where the partner mile is clearly worth more than ₹2 each — for example, business class awards on Air France Flying Blue during Promo Rewards months (up to 50% off awards), or Cathay Pacific business class Asia Miles redemptions. At 2:1, you need the partner mile to be worth twice the Unbox value to justify the transfer.
  • Apply Air Miles in part-payment on every booking. Since the maximum is 80% by miles, always apply miles to that threshold and pay the 20% by card. The 20% card payment earns further 2 Air Miles per ₹100 — compounding your balance incrementally on every booking.
  • Watch for Solitaire Air Miles transfer bonus windows (April–June 2026 promotional offer: 20% bonus). If you hold the Solitaire card, time large partner transfers to coincide with active bonus windows to maximise miles received.
  • Never redeem Air Miles for voucher purchases at Kotak Unbox (value drops to ₹0.50/mile). Always use Air Miles for flight or hotel bookings where the value is ₹1/mile, not for vouchers at half that rate.
  • If you fly IndiGo domestically as your primary carrier, the IndiGo Kotak XL is better than Air+ for IndiGo-specific savings. Up to 21 BluChips per ₹100 on IndiGo bookings vastly outperforms the general Air+ rate on IndiGo flights. Carry both if you also want a miles card for other airlines and hotel bookings.
  • Enable international transactions on your card before travelling abroad. Even if you plan to use a different low-markup card primarily, activate Kotak international transactions for lounge access validation and as a backup payment method.
  • Check your Air Miles expiry dates every 6 months. Air Miles expire 3 years from accrual date. Unlike some programmes, there is no activity-based reset of the expiry clock. Monitor balances in the Kotak app and plan redemptions or transfers well before expiry.
  • Pair Kotak Air+ with a no-miles-on-international-limitation card. Use Air+ as your domestic flight and Kotak Unbox card; use a card like HDFC Infinia (2% forex + rewards on international), Amazon Pay ICICI (1.99% forex), or MakeMyTrip ICICI (0.99% forex) for all international currency spends.
